Wordpress

So why is Wordpress so efficient?  The first thing that comes to my mind is plugins.  The thousands of plugins that are available for download makes it a convenient one-stop shop.

Many of these plugins are free, though some have 'pro' upgrades.  This large collection of plugins can be thought of as the intelligence from different sectors of the web design industry, all available from one screen (for the most part).

Since taking on web design in Saskatoon, our company Brandom.ca has really advocated for the genius that is Wordpress.  Some of our favorite themes include Neve and Divi Builder (theme builder).

With Divi Builder, wordpress website design is a breeze.  You have a solid plan set out for yourself and the business, and then the ultra gui-friendly frontend of Divi Builder (Elegant Themes) allows you to visualize (no, really visualize) your progress as you design.  The modern, responsive technology available in this theme is multi-functional to say the least.

Back to Wordpress, some other items that I find beneficial are:

  • Plugins - as mentioned, thousands and updated often
  • Code - built into pages
    • most versions have a Code editor and a Visual editor depending on your comfort level
    • Gutenberg and Classic Editor are useful as well
  • Forms
    • there are so many free contact form plugins out there opposed to the traditional hair-pulling processes of creating forms (designers these days have it so easy, ha).
    • some of these forms will integrate with other software packages (such as MailChimp integration)
  • Security
    • Security is big this day and age; and the options and levels of security that Wordpress offers is substantial
    • JetPack is a common related plugin
  • Optimization
    • everything from images to cache purging to video streaming
Amongst all the awesome benefits of Wordpress, it should be noted that it does have its disadvantages such as plugin conflicts and version discrepancies (don't ask if you don't already know, lol).

General Fundamentals of Using Wordpress
  1. You need a Login and Password (unless you have cPanel access)
  2. You need to decide early on what your Theme will be
    1. all of your other pages will branch out from this theme
  3. You need to set your contact details
    1. Settings tab (important contact details should be entered)
  4. Navigation (Menu)
    1. As you begin to build, you can set your Menu through:
      1. Appearance > Menu
  5. Plugins
    1. Add New
    2. Activate
    3. Check for Updates (important)
      1. it is worth noting though that some updates can break your website
      2. Test, test and if you forget, test again
If you are a new designer, or a client who would like to take more control of their own business content, Wordpress is the way to go.  It is the perfect way to avoid code with a minimal learning curve.

Attorney General supports Orange... | November 13th, 1988 | Charles Cobbertt

Attorney General Cary Edwards has filed a court brief in support of a political interference and harassment lawsuit Orange Police Chief Robert Sorge has filed against the mayor and police director. Under state law, Edwards maintains, "a chief of police must fuction as the executive of the police department" and municipalities cannot appoint subordinate police officers from the ranks and make them "superior to the chief." Mayor Robert L. Brown appointed Lt. Charles Cobbertt as police director on July 5, four days after assuming office, and the city council approved the action. Edwards' brief says "it is incompatible with the office (of a police chief) for a police officer to assume the duties of an appropriate authority." Sorge two months ago sued Brown and Cobbertt, contending he has been made the object of their "political interference in the workplace and political harrassment" ever since Cobbertt became his boss. Charles Cobbertt - retired Police Director

Charles "Charlie" Cobbertt’s life story is a powerful example of overcoming adversity and leading revolutionary change. Charlie’s early life, deeply influenced by his upbringing in the segregated South, set a foundation of resilience and determination.
